This text is THE major reference on « buddha nature » for all Mahayana traditions, including the four great schools of Tibet. It was composed around the 4th or 5th century by Asanga, inspired by Buddha Maitreya. In fact, « buddha nature » is only the topic of its extensive 4th section. The seven areas it teaches are: buddha, dharma, sangha, buddha nature, enlightenment, enlightened qualities and enlightened activities.
Ken received full transmission of detailed teachings on this text, according to Asanga’s own commentary and that of Jamgon Kongtrul, from Khenpo Tsultim Gyamtso and Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, as well as advice from Khentin Tai Situpa. He and Katia published three successive translations into English: the first was the root text only; the second the root plus a succinct word commentary and the final (this) one accompanied by a full commentary from Ken, condensed from Asanga and Kongtrul’s works.
This clear and poetic version from Ken is often the one that current teachers prefer to use.
